Thermowells are tubular fittings used to protect temperature sensors installed in industrial processes. A thermowell consists of a tube closed at one end and mounted in the process stream.
Thermowells are recommended to protect both the operator and the temperature sensor.
A temperature sensor such as a thermometer, thermocouple or resistance temperature detector is inserted in the open end of the tube which is usually in the open air outside the process piping or vessel and any thermal insulation. The process fluid transfers heat to the thermowell wall, which in turn transfer heat to the sensor. Since more mass is present, the sensor's response to process temperature changes is delayed. If the sensor fails, it can be easily replaced without draining the vessel or piping. To be representative of the average temperature of fluid, the thermowell must extend a few per cent of the inside diameter of the process pipe or vessel
Thermowells are recommended to protect both the operator and the temperature sensor. The proper thermowell will reduce the possibility of damage to the temperature sensor due to corrosion, pressure or the flow of abrasive or viscous media. In addition a defective instrument may be removed without shutting down or draining the process. Most wells have 1/2" process & instrument connections with a 0.260" bore. Wells with other dimensions and materials are readily available on order.
STAINLESS STEEL
At higher temperatures or pressures or where corrosion could be a problem stainless steel should be considered. Our standard 304 and 316 S/S have excellent resistance to mildly corrosive atmospheres & can withstand higher pressures and temperatures than brass. For more severe applications we provide Monel and Inconel wells to order. We can also TEFLON coat custom thermowells.
Most Thermowells are custom made to your specifications. Please call our technical services department to discuss your applications.
